Other names: tigre (French and Spanish); bagh (Hindi and Bengali); lao hu (Chinese); tag (Tibetan)
Description: Immortalized in poetry, novels, and countless movies, the Tiger has a reputation as a man-eater. Actually, this is something it does rarely, usually when the Tiger is old or sick, and can't find food. The largest of all cats, the Tiger is easily recognized by its stripes, dark orange to reddish ocher body, and creamy white belly. A male Siberian Tiger can weigh up to 705 pounds (320 kilograms). Very strong swimmers, Tigers usually live close to water, in countries like India, Thailand, the former USSR, and China. They will hide undetected in tall grass, and attack their prey from behind. Tigers eat large animals like deer, wild boar, or cattle, and usually hunt after sunset.
